The Pentagon's nonlethal heat beam is set to undergo a new round of testing this month to assess its effectiveness over water, potentially expanding the technology's use in fending off threatening boats from ports or ships. The Active Denial System, which has been touted primarily as a nonlethal weapon for crowd control and urban operations, may soon be used by the Coast Guard for port protection and has also evoked interest from the Navy, according to a senior Pentagon official. One of the systems was scheduled for shipment to Eglin AFB, Fla., where it's set to undergo a military utility assessment (MUA) for overwater operations, according to Sue Payton, the deputy undersecretary of Defense for advanced systems and concepts.
