Key decisions in Italy on defense and aerospace acquisition and industrial policies are in flux after the very narrow win of the leftist coalition led by Romano Prodi in Italy's general election. Prodi's Union coalition will hold merely a few votes' margin in the Senate, while it maintains a wider majority in the lower house. With such a slim lead, Prodi's ability to form and maintain a governing coalition is still at risk. After the Union's inability to clearly trounce the ruling center-right coalition led by Silvio Berlusconi, political analysts say there could be a protracted period of uncertainty in Italian politics.
