French defense officials say they are rethinking their strategy for a medium-altitude, long-endurance (MALE) unmanned aerial vehicle in a final bid to move the long-stalled European initiative off the drawing board or find a replacement solution. The French-led initiative, known as EuroMALE, was raked over the coals earlier this year by a French parliamentary report that found it insufficiently tuned to the requirements of neighboring countries, too vehicle-oriented and poorly integrated with other reconnaissance assets (AW&ST Mar. 6, p. 28). So far, only Spain has agreed to commit to the 340-million-euro ($435-million) undertaking, and the French government has signaled it is not in a position to provide more than its current 28% share.
