Concerns are growing among international airlines that a weaker global economy could dramatically impact current strong industry revenue performance and that there is large sector-wide overcapacity on the horizon. "The reason why we have survived high oil prices is because of the strong economic growth," International Air Transport Assn. Chief Economist Brian Pearce said at the association's annual general meeting in Paris last week. "I'm concerned this is not sustainable." While the air transport industry historically grows about 5% annually, revenues have been up around 10% in the past three years. "We cannot rely on this experience," Pearce warns.
