Boeing is getting ready to commence flight testing of a ramjet-powered missile demonstrator, which could represent a large step toward achieving the Pentagon's goal to be able to quickly strike fleeting targets at great distances. Boeing has been working with the Office of Naval Research and Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency for several years on the HyFly dual-combustion ramjet and will commence the full-up flight-test phase toward year-end, says Carl Avila, Boeing's director of advanced weapons and missile systems. The goal is to fly the missile up to speeds of Mach 4-6, and achieve ranges of 400-600 naut. mi.
