AirTran and Alaska reported tidy second-quarter profits, representing AirTran's best ever. JetBlue struggled to assimilate its new 100-seat aircraft, but managed slightly improved earnings anyway. And the new US Airways stunned the industry with what CEO Doug Parker called "truly remarkable results, given where US Airways was just a year ago." The old US Airways, which merged with America West Airlines to form the new US Airways, was in Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection a year ago. Debt and reorganization expenses turned the carrier's $59-million operating profit for the quarter into a $105-million net loss. America West delivered lackluster results—$15 million in operating income and a $2-million net loss.
