Deployment of a Franco-Italian-led United Nations task force to Lebanon could profoundly modify perceptions of Europe in the international security arena, and Italy's stature within the European defense structure. However, failure could draw ridicule if the high-risk mission fails. The force, known as Unifil 2, is expected to have 4,500 troops in place by mid-September and another 1,500 or so by October, according to defense officials from France, which was instrumental in writing the U.N. resolution backing it. Unifil 2 is intended to stabilize the political situation in southern Lebanon and avoid the flare-up of further clashes between Shi-ite Hezbollah militia and the Israel Defense Forces.
