When an Aviation Week& Space Technology pilot flew the Airbus A380 recently (see p. 48), the flight validated with certainty one important point about the airplane: It is a technical success. We were pretty sure that would be the case all along. When it comes to what Airbus calls its "industrialization challenges," though, an entirely different set of questions is posed. The A380 cockpit layout is user-friendly and the Airbus-pioneered fly-by-wire system makes the massive transport easy to fly. The company's bet on advanced materials, which looked like a potential pitfall at the outset of the program, appears to have paid off.
