Tailored arrivals have finally made it to the U.S. And if all goes as planned, flight trials at San Francisco International Airport will lead to fuel-saving operations late next year, which could then spread to other U.S. airports. During the demonstration flights with United Airlines Boeing 777s, "4D" trajectories (three spatial dimensions, plus time) are transmitted from ATC computers on the ground to airliners' flight management system computers. ATC software creates a trajectory based on the current traffic situation, which is sent to the cockpit. Pilots can approve the proposed flight path with the push of a button.
