U.S. and European space planners are moving to more closely integrate oceanography and meteorological programs as Europe prepares to launch its first polar weather satellite. Metop 1, the first of three advanced spacecraft planned for the Eumetsat Polar System (EPS), is set to be orbited on Oct. 17, following resolution of the latest of a series of ground segment and sensor glitches that have affected the spacecraft, initially due to be orbited in June. Metop will include an innovative infrared atmospheric sounding interferometer (IASI), supplied by Alcatel Alenia Space through French space agency CNES, that Eumetsat says will revolutionize vertical temperature and water vapor profile measurement, considerably improving forecast reliability.
