Dassault's radical and unusual decision to terminate its Falcon 5X program after repeated delays in the development of the Safran Silvercrest engine will affect the business aviation industry at several levels. Beyond the airframer itself reshuffling plans for its product range, customers as well as other aircraft manufacturers will have to factor in a shift in their anticipated business environment.Meanwhile, the announcement of the launch of a new Falcon program hints that Dassault may step up implementation of some technologies it has been researching.The Falcon 5X promised impressive capability, notably thanks to the Silvercrest. It would have featured a cavernous 102-in.-wide cabin and a 5,200-nm range enabling a nonstop flight from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to Tokyo. And it was to be the first aircraft ever equipped with a combined vision system, giving the crew simultaneous synthetic and enhanced vision, coupled with the Falcons' customary high performance during short take-offs and landings.
