摘要

The Pentagon is shifting its focus from ballistic missile defense to intercepting hypersonic and cruise missiles by launching new programs to keep pace with Chinese and Russian advances.Missile Defense Agency (MDA) Director U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Samuel Greaves has even gone so far as to remove the word "ballistic" from the organization's mission statement to emphasize a broader missile threat spectrum. The reason? If the U.S. goes to war with a global power, Michael Griffin, undersecretary of defense for research and engineering, believes it will be a conventional fight-nuclear, chemical and biological weapons will not be used-that does not involve attacks on each other's homelands."The Chinese ability to hold our forward-deployed assets at risk with very high-speed, very hard-to-intercept precision-guided systems-that's something to which we have to respond," Griffin says.Thomas Karako, missile defense project director at the Center for Strategic and International Studies(CSIS) in Washington, tells Aviation Week it is "high time" the U.S. addresses the full spectrum of missile defense threats.
