After decades of building some of the world's most famous manned fighter jets, Russia's MiG aircraft design bureau is now positioning itself to be Russia's champion of unmanned air vehicle (UAV) design. With Sukhoi's fighter designs having grabbed a significant chunk of Russia's domestic requirements as well as overseas exports in recent years, Russian Aircraft Corp. (RAC) MiG, part of the larger United Aircraft Corp., sees the development of UAVs, and in particular unmanned combat air vehicles (UCAV) ,as its next big opportunity.With the development of the MiG-35-a radically updated version of the MiG-29-due for completion in early 2018, MiG is now quietly beginning work on a family of UAVs and UCAVs. "Pilotless aviation complexes are the future," Ilya Tarasenko, director general of RAC MiG told Aviation Week at the Dubai Airshow.
