Although Boeing will begin 2018 hoping to put months of technical challenges, schedule delays and cost overruns behind it, the company's KC-46 Pegasus tanker program again fell short in 2017.In December Boeing finally acknowledged what the U.S. Air Force has long projected-that it will not begin delivering the long-anticipated tanker until 2018. Costs continue to rise, with Boeing taking an additional $329 million charge related to KC-46 development in the third quarter of 2017, on top of the more than $2 billion incurred since 2014.Even more concerning was the news in September that the Air Force had identified three major deficiencies related to the refueling process that require resolution before the KC-46 can be used operationally. The two most worrying issues involved the tanker's rigid refueling boom: un-commanded boom extensions when disconnecting from a receiver aircraft with fuel flowing, and a tendency of the boom to scrape the surface of receiving aircraft. The second problem could be of particular concern for stealth aircraft, such as the B-2 bomber, F-22 or F-35 fighters, if the boom causes damage to low-observable stealth coatings.
