Istanbul's new airport is the jewel in the crown of the megaprojects presided over by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.He set the challenge of converting the grasslands on Istanbul's Black Sea coast into a massive gateway in less than four years. He has personally overseen its progress, and his government aircraft was the first to use the new airport's runways on June 21. During its first stage, the airport will have two runways, one main terminal and enough capacity for 90 million passengers. Ultimately, it could be expanded to six runways and up to 200 million passengers, making it the largest airport in the world.
