Boeing and Airbus combined have delivered thousands of airliners capable of executing precision approaches and landings using the Ground-Based Augmentation System (GBAS) to ensure the integrity and improve the accuracy of GPS signals. But only a few commercial airports in the U.S. now host such a landing system.Honeywell builds the only GBAS with FAA system design approval. The company's SLS-4000 SmartPath system supports Category 1 (Cat. 1) instrument approaches and landings that culminate in a 200-ft. decision height at which pilots must obtain a visual reference, or an automatic landing; an upgrade provides Cat. 2 capability down to a 100-ft. decision height. Honeywell says it is postponing development of an SLS-5000 system capable of more precise, Cat. 3, minima until airliners with compatible avionics become available.Boeing this spring reported delivering 3,500 airliners with Honeywell or Rockwell Collins multimode receivers capable of using GBAS landing systems (GLS), with another 5,000 on order. GLS Cat. 2/3-capable avionics come as standard equipment on the Boeing 747-8,787 and 777; Cat. 1-capa-ble avionics are optional on the 737NG and 737 MAX series. The manufacturer expects to offer GLS Cat. 2/3 avionics on the 737 MAX as of 2020.
