摘要

For United Launch Alliance (ULA), deciding how much reusability to build into its new line of Vulcan rockets came down to a question of math: Is it better to get 100% of the rocket value back some of the time, or two-thirds of the value all of the time? The answer, says ULA CEO Tory Bruno, depends on how big satellites will be in the future. Heavier spacecraft generally require more performance from their launchers to reach their intended orbits, possibly to the point of draining fuel reserved for the booster's propulsive flight back to Earth."We think there are going to be plenty of big ones," says Bruno. "Our math worked out where it was better to get two-thirds of the [rocket's] value back all of the time."The two-thirds value Bruno refers to is the cost of the Vulcan's first-stage engines, which will be either a pair of Blue Origin BE4s or two Aerojet Rocketdyne ARls.Unlike SpaceX's Falcon rockets or Blue Origin's upcoming New Glenn, which fly back for a vertical touchdown on a landing pad, ULA plans to separate the Vulcan's engine compartment from the first stage for a parachute glide and midair helicopter recovery. The rocket's fuel tanks and other equipment would be discarded."NASA archives have studies on propulsive flyback dating back 30 years, and the conclusion everyone made is that it would be very difficult and challenging technically because of the environments experienced on the return trip," says Bruno.
