A tour down Lockheed Martin's mile-long Fort Worth assembly line for the F-35 fighter indicates a long-awaited and program-defining production escalation is in full swing. The raw numbers reveal the magnitude of an ongoing, three-year sprint by a global production system.Through the end of 2016, Lockheed required eight years to deliver the first 200 production fighters. The F-35's customers expect the OEM to have delivered 290 more between 2017 and 2019.Lockheed has thus far delivered 56 F-35s out of 91 planned this year. After adding 66 more deliveries in 2017, Lockheed needs to deliver almost 160 F-35s in slightly more than 15 months-averaging one handover nearly every three calendar days-to remain on schedule.Company officials acknowledge the pace of deliveries is slower than planned but remain confident that the first stealthy aircraft to enter the aviation equivalent of mass production will hit its delivery targets."We are going to make those 91 deliveries [in 2018]." says Steve Howes, F-35 global operations production deputy.Achieving that goal requires overcoming multiple setbacks. A manufacturing glitch prompted Pratt & Whitney to halt deliveries of F135 engines during the spring. Around the same time, the U.S. Joint Program Office (JPO) halted deliveries for several weeks due to an impasse over financial responsibility for dozens of F-35s delivered months earlier with a manufacturing flaw.
