A PAIR OF HIGH-SPEED CONCEPT VEHICLES UNDER STUDYby Stratolaunch could play a key role in the development of the company's in-house-designed PGA liquid rocket engine as well as provide a valuable large-scale flying testbed for U.S. hypersonic developments.The testbeds could provide a bridge to Stratolaunch's planned family of space launch vehicles, all of which are designed to be powered by the same baseline 200,000-lb.-thrust PGA engine. The family includes a series of modular small-to-medium-payload rockets and a fully reusable spaceplane called Black Ice. This medium-class payload concept is also targeted at potentially carrying astronauts to low Earth orbit.But intriguingly, beyond the development role, Stratolaunch believes the rocket-powered vehicles-particularly the larger of the two concepts, could be used serendipitously as a flying testbed for U.S. national hypersonic projects. "The U.S. has a critical need for hypersonic test capability, especially in flight, and we will make this available for government and industry,"says the company's senior technical fellow for hypersonics, Stephen Corda."This wasn't part of our original road map, but we understand the U.S. government is very interested in hypersonic technology, so we took a look at it a few months ago [and] said,'What does this airplane offer and what do we offer [with] the new engine we are developing?'" says CEO Jean Floyd. "We put together a concept, and it turns out you can do quite a bit."Unveiled at the American Institute of Aerodynamics and Astronautics International Spaceplanes and Hypersonics conference in Orlando, Florida, the vehicle is potentially multirole, he adds. "It's a stepping-stone to Black Ice and gets our engine up and running sooner. We've been getting quite a bit of interest from the U.S. government on the hypersonic design and [hope to work together] on additional studies for that.
