After searching for more than a decade, the U.S. Air Force finally chose a replacement for the aging Vietnam-era Bell UH-1N Huey and settled on the Boeing-Leonardo MH-139.The service initially wanted to refurbish and upgrade former Army Sikorsky UH-60As. Then it consideredpurchasing new M-model Black Hawks in a sole-source contract from Sikorsky as part of the Army's multiyear contract. Under pressure from Congress, the Air Force decided in 2016 to conduct a full and open competition.During the drawn-out procurement process, U.S. Strategic Command leadership complained the source selection was too slow. Its commander, Gen. John Hyten, said in August, "We are going to get a new helicopter if I have to die trying or if I have to kill somebody to do it."Boeing was paid a $375 million firm-fixed-price installment Sept. 24. The company will build up to 84 helicopters for $2.38 billion to guard U.S. nuclear missile sites and transport VIPs around the nation's capital."The previous administration decided-and I think they were right-wewere required to have a competition," Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson said during a Sept. 26 event at the National Press Club. "And as it turns out,that was probably the right decision-Boeing won the competition at a sig-nificantly lower price point. I think the taxpayer gets a good deal out of that."
