As interest in electric-powered aircraft accelerates, NASA has mounted the first electric cruise motor on the X-57 Maxwell, a heavily modified Tecnam P2006T piston twin that is undergoing transformation into the research agency's first piloted X-plane in two decades.The modification, which involves replacing the P2006T's Rotax 912 S3 pistons with 60-kW electric cruise motors as well as adding controllers, batteries and new instrumentation, is taking place at Northrop Grumman-owned Scaled Composites in Mojave. On completion of the changes, the aircraft will be transferred to the nearby NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center (AFRC), where flight tests are expected to begin in mid-2019.Currently, only one of the X-57's two Joby Aviation-built JM-X57 motors is installed for fit checks on the wing. The second is on the Airvolt test stand, a specially instrumented 13.5-ft.-tall facility at AFRC designed to measure voltage, current, temperature, vibration, torque and thrust. "We are getting the control laws tested and tuned and motor endurance testing done so we can qualify it for flight," says X-57 chief engineer Matt Redifer.
