Any day now, UTC Aerospace Systems (UTAS) will combine with Rockwell Collins to become Collins Aerospace, a leading Tier 1 supplier in the aerospace and defense (A&D) industry. Meanwhile, corporate cousin Pratt & Whitney is ramping up to meet what could be its largest commercial and military engine production run ever, thanks to the geared turbofan (GTF) and other powerplants.But those feats already are old news to investors, and they might pale in comparison to where parent United Technologies Corp. (UTC) is trying to go next. Subtly but significantly, UTC is looking to shift its focus to next-generation digital business. Considering that UTC soon will be far bigger than any other non-OEM, including the advent of Collins Aerospace, the journey could be telling for the rest of industry."Digital is going to enable us to create a step change in productivity, much like how the GTF architecture has delivered a step change in performance for our commercial customers," says Shane Eddy, senior vice president for operations at Pratt.
