Startup Xwing has emerged from stealth mode with plans to develop autonomy software to make small fixed-wing and vertical-lift aircraft easier to fly and ultimately fully autonomous. The company has raised $4 million in seed funding, led by Eniac Ventures with Array Ventures and other angel investors.San Francisco-based Xwing has completed proof-of-con-cept flights of its autonomy software "stack" in a subscale unmanned aircraft and is now focusing on development of the perception system required to provide an autonomous vehicle with situational awareness and obstacle avoidance. Founded in 2016 by software entrepreneur Marc Piette, Xwing is developing a suite of technologies for the key sensing, reasoning and control functions of autonomous flight, and targeting small general aviation (GA) aircraft and theemerging electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing (eVTOL) market. The Silicon Valley startup is a potential disruptor in a market occupied by autopilot and avionics manufacturers."I was taking flying lessons in Palo Alto, [California], and looking at the sad state, to me, of the GA industry," says Piette. "I was thinking about the hurdles to GA, and how to remove the barriers to adoption and turn it into a more widespread mode of transportation rather than just a hobby."Piette saw the requirements of a pilot's license as the major hurdle, and an area where autonomy could be applied to reduce the skills and training required. Maxime Gariel, Xwing's chief technology officer, comes from Rockwell Collins, where he worked on optionally piloted vehicles and was chief engineer on the flight control system for Leonardo's SW-4 Solo unmanned helicopter.
