摘要

In 2015, Israeli TV stations broadcast a satellite picture of what appeared to be an Iranian ICBM poised for launch. But follow-up analysis by researchers at the Middlebury Institute in Monterey, California, found that the giant gray tube, which had sent the country into a tizzy, actually was only a launchpad gantry."It did look like a missile, and it did scare a lot of people," says Melissa Hanham, a senior research associate at Middlebury's Center for Nonprolif-eration Studies (CNS). "You have to know how a gantry works. This one slides back and forth on rails."To debunk the story, Hanham and colleagues painstakingly created 3D models of the site using a computer program called SketchUp. These days, the researchers have an easier way to keep tabs on Iran's launch sites: They receive automated email alerts from Planet, a San Francisco-based company that operates a fleet of nearly 200 observation satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO). The network can collect pictures of nearly every location on Earth every day.
