After a tumultuous 2018 for the big engine makers, mostly related to production pressures on commercial models, there are hopes for a smoother-if perhaps even busier-year ahead as manufacturing capacity finally matches demand.For General Electric, Pratt & Whitney and Rolls-Royce, more than a decade's worth of major new civil engine development programs are either complete or, in the case of GE's GE9X for Boeing's 777X, in the final stages of certification, and the focus is shifting to sustained higher production rates that will meet rising delivery commitments to Airbus and Boeing.Pratt & Whitney aims to continue its production ramp-up through 2019 after effectively catching up with deliveries of PW1000G geared turbofans to Airbus for the A320neo and recently re-branded A220 families. After two years of slower-than-planned shipments and a series of in-service teething issues, the worst appears to be behind the manufacturer as it looks to a steadier 2019 delivery stream on the back of 750 engines produced in 2018-compared to 374 PWlOOOGs in 2017.
