In 2018, major fault lines developed in the relations between the Middle East's largest power, Saudi Arabia, and its Western allies.For decades, Riyadh has been one of the major buyers of European and U.S. defense equipment, but there is growing uneasiness about how Saudi Arabia has been using it.Saudi Arabia's war in Yemen was already controversial, but the worsening famine there, said to be one of the worst humanitarian crises in history, has prompted diplomats to call for a cease-fire and the U.S. to halt the aerial refueling flights that support it. There is growing concern about the machinations of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, particularly following the murder of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October.
