Australian air combat squadrons began reequipping with the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning on Dec. 10, when the first two flew into the country's main fighter base. For the moment, the F-35 is the biggest item in Australian defense acquisition spending.It will not hold that title for long. Naval programs are set to dominate the equipment budget in the next decade. Indeed, the government already is spending heavily on a submarine project before it has signed a comprehensive agreement with designer Naval Group.
