Consumer markets have done well building a digital world parallel to the physical world of products, services, transactions, movement and information. Digitaliz-ing the highly varied and safety-critical world of aircraft maintenance is much tougher, but it is happening fast on a number of fronts.Starting with basics, Southwest Airlines is pursuing the largest airline implementation ever of a modern maintenance-management system. Joe Marcella, director of technical operations business intelligence, says the primary remaining tasks are testing, training and migrating more than 750 Boeing 737s to IFS Maintenix. He expects to finish by late 2019 or early 2020. UPS is preparing to implement its Aircraft Configuration Management Tool-the underlying software is IFS Maintenix-for about 250 aircraft.
