Although the benefits will not be available right away, the recent launch of Iridium's eighth and final batch of second-generation Iridi-um Next satellites portends a new era of global tracking and communications capabilities for commercial aviation.After the Iridium Next constellation of 66 cross-linked, low-Earth-or-bit satellites is tested and operational, the Aireon joint venture of Iridium and five air navigation service providers (ANSP) will start operational trials of its space-based surveillance system, for the first time providing a global means of tracking aircraft over oceanic and remote regions beyond radar coverage.The new satellites also introduce Iridium's Certus high-speed, L-band voice and data service for flight deck communications.
