Thanks mainly to the success of the multirole UH-72A Lakota, Airbus Helicopters has come from virtually nowhere in a little over 15 years to become the third-biggest maker of military rotorcraft in the U.S. However, with UH-72A production for the U.S. Army due to run only through 2021 based on the current backlog, the company is focused on sustaining and growing its North American presence by bolstering the Lakota orderbook and offering upgrades as well as winning new programs.The first of these opportunities is the U.S. Navy's Advanced TrainingHelicopter System (ATHS) contest to replace the service's venerable TH-57 Sea Ranger, a variant of the Bell 206. The Navy first began replacement studies as far back as 2007, but initial efforts were focused on a proposed TH-57D upgrade, which was abandoned in 2012. In contrast, the recently launched ATHS TH-XX effort is on a fast track, having emerged in October with a draft request for information that outlines TH-57 fleet replacement by 2023.
