The FAA expects to release technical guidance later this year that will enable avionics manufacturers to build systems based on new collision-avoidance logic that may eventually replace the traffic-alert and collision avoidance system (TCAS) that has protected aircraft from midair crashes for nearly three decades.In October 2018, standards organization RTCA published minimum performance requirements for the Airborne Collision Avoidance System for NextGen (ACAS X), which takes advantage of computational techniques not available at the time TCAS was developed. The agency expects ACAS X will provide pilots with improved protection and fewer nuisance alerts in airspace with reduced aircraft separations.
