Accelerated scheduling and exoatmospheric interceptor programs have a bleak track record over the past decade, but an impatient Pentagon leadership decided on March 10 to try it again. The Next-Generation Interceptor (NGI) will enter service as early as 2028, or up to two years faster than the previous "end of the decade" timeline for the long-delayed follow-on and replacement for the 20-year-old Boeing Ground-Based Interceptor (GBI), several defense officials informed Congress during a series of hearing appearances in mid-March.
