Raytheon now stands as the sole remaining bidder for the Long-Range Standoff (LRSO) program, a $4.5 billion cruise missile that replaces the AGM-86B and preserves a nuclear strike role for a portion of the B-52 fleet beyond 2030. Competitive bidding processes sometimes do not end as planned, and that sentiment has proved true for the U.S. Air Force's nuclear modernization portfolio. The bidding war between Northrop Grumman and the tandem of Boeing and Lockheed Martin to build the B-21 ended formally in 2015 with a $21.4 billion contract award to Northrop Grumman. However, the competition for the Ground-Based Strategic Deterrent (GBSD) program has been less fierce. Activity fizzled when Boeing decided to withdraw last year, leaving Northrop as the sole bidder for an $80 billion contract expected to be signed shortly.
