A high-profile review of U.S. Army aviation plans is reaching its apex, with Army Chief of Staff Gen. Peter J. Schoomak-er slated to make key decisions on adjusting the service's modernization and force structure plans in the coming weeks. : U.S. Army aviation planners are en- couraged by the new chief's bias toward technological modernization and his support of the service's helicopter force, stemming largely from his special operations background. But they worry that Army aviation funding has been curbed, and new projects purged, so ruthlessly that even the few that survive will never fully mature. At the outset, the Aviation Task Force was told to assume no increase in the size of the aviation community within the service. However, Maj. Gen. James D. Thurman, the study director, says that assumption may have to be revisited as the service tries to realign. Although no major platform cancellations loom, Thurman indicated, the study could influence such issues as what upgrades to make to AH-64 Apaches in Block 3 aircraft and how many CH-47 Chinooks the service will operate. "We are definitively in need of additional CH-47s," added Brig. Gen. Edward J. Sinclair, commanding general of the Army aviation center.
