Concepts and experiments that could fundamentally change the way the U.S. Defense Dept. handles logistics and the supply chain in the information age form one of the key focuses of the Pentagon's Office of Force Transformation. Not that it will be easy. The ideas are so novel that no one in the U.S. military is using them, and most of the early adopters are in the private sector. "Sense and respond" logistics foresees a system that is networked so data flows seamlessly from the battlefield to any supply unit or contractor that can support U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force requirements as they emerge. And information technology will be employed to identify supply usage patterns much earlier than currently possible. With real-time information arriving in the U.S., contractors would be alerted to rapidly changing demand to help them anticipate shifting military priorities. Depot maintenance priorities could also be shifted based on the latest information from the field.
