Faced with a broad range of surface-to-air threats in Iraq and other locations, U.S. Army special operations pilots are clamoring for new tools to improve the surviv-ability of their helicopters. The call comes at a time when Army leaders are struggling to compensate for shortfalls in aircraft self-protection by rushing new missile warning and coun-termeasures devices to the field. The urgency of the upgrades became apparent late last year when a series of Army helicopters were downed by Iraqi surface-to-air missiles and other arms, killing more than 30 soldiers.
