Regional airlines have not only continued to grow rapidly in the downturn since Sept. 11, 2001, they have also started to ap- proach parity in the number of flights with mainline carriers at many of the largest hubs in the U.S. Cincinnati is the only hub where regional jets have exceeded half of the flights so far. RJ flights there now account for 72% of the operations, up from 58% in December 2000. Cincinnati is a hub of Comair, the carrier that built a large fleet of RJs starting in the early 1990s before they were popular (Comair is now a Delta Air Lines subsidiary). During the past three years, the RJ share at Washington Dulles more than doubled to 44% from 19%, as they did at Chicago O'Hare, which grew to 41% from 20%. RJ traffic at Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport soared to 39% from 16% of flights, and Newark's more than tripled to 38% from 11%. The other two major New York area airports also showed increases. At LaGuardia, RJ flights rose to 30% from 22% of the total and at John F. Kennedy International, to 15% from 5%.
