摘要

Two more low-cost airlines report 2003 profits, one maintaining its momentum and the other regaining it, but each faces new challenges in 2004. JetBlue Airways, continuing its rapid growth in capacity, traffic and revenue, logged net income of $19.5 million in the last three months of 2003 and $103.9 million for the full year, up from $15.2 million and $54.9 million, respectively. But the carrier is losing ground in the measure of merit it values most, operating margin, because it's running into what it has inflicted on rivals up to now-stiff fare competition. For Frontier Airlines, also growing fast, the December quarter was the third of its 2004 fiscal year. Its net profit reached $5.5 million for the quarter and $18.4 million for the nine months, reversing year-earlier losses of $6.4 million and $9.9 million, respectively. But Frontier acknowledges that keeping costs down is both critical to its success and hard to do in a hub as expensive as Denver.
