The worldwide military maintenance, repair and overhaul market―consisting of depot and field repairs―is worth approximately $51 billion, according to one of the first valuations of that particular industry. The global commercial MRO market, by comparison, is worth $34-37 billion―pushing the combined value of commercial and military MRO to more than $85 billion. Of the military MRO total, the U.S., with its approximately 16,000 aircraft, accounts for 42% of the world market, or about $21 billion, according to Kevin Michaels, a principal at consulting firm AeroStrategy, which released the study at the Aviation Week & Space Technology Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul Conference on Apr. 20. "Tier-one" forces―in NATO, Western Europe and advanced militaries in the Middle East and Asia―account for 31%, followed by the rest of the world combined at 27%.
