Los Angeles International Airport will be making short-term changes to accommodate the super-jumbo Airbus A380, but nonetheless it will disrupt the operations of other aircraft. LAX has evolved to routinely accommodate Boeing 747 jumbos but the extra size of the A380 is enough to require physical changes and operational restrictions. Qantas is expected to be the first airline to bring the A380 to LAX, in the fourth quarter of 2006. That date "keeps moving to the right," but the airport is not allowing itself to delay its preparations, said Rick Wells, the LAX interim deputy executive director for projects and facilities development. He said Airbus expects five A380s to land and depart daily in 2007, a low fraction of the 2,000 operations planned this summer, but they will create an impact as they move around. He believes it can be made to work, noting that the airport was not built for 747s yet has adapted to them.
