NASA's Aura mission, to be launched June 19, will be just the second element in a six-satellite constellation, funded by the U.S., France and Cana- da. It's intended to improve our understanding of weather and climate change mechanisms, and our ability to predict and affect their long-term impact. The $2.3-billion constellation, dubbed the A-Train (for Aqua and Aura, the engine and caboose), is expected to provide a wealth of data on the impact of water, ice, clouds, aerosols and atmospheric chemistry on weather and climate patterns, while pioneering in the area of precision formation flying. Based on daily readings taken during the early after- noon, it will complement a smaller morning constellation consisting of Terra, SAC-C and Earth Observing 1, already in orbit.
