摘要

After a long journey that has made it lame, the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit has finally come across strong signs of water and is now getting its share of the limelight. While Spirit searched over parched terrain, its twin Opportunity has had an easy time grabbing headlines, having landed just tens of feet away from historically wet rocks. The find revitalizes the Spirit mission and shows the great value of mobility. It includes several novel rocks discovered at the base of the Columbia Hills, which Spirit reached after traveling 3.4 km. (2 mi.) in the five months since its landing. The rocks are still being analyzed but leading explanations for their formation involve water. With Opportunity crawling into a crater "this is like back in the first few days of the mission—there's something new and exciting at both sites," said Scott M. McLennan, a rover science team member.

McLennan说:“随着机会爬入火山口,这就像在任务开始的头几天一样-两个站点都有新的令人兴奋的地方。”
