Boeing will boost the operating efficiency of the longer-range 777-300ER by about 2.25% late next (year, increasing its maximum range by 175 naut. mi. to 7,880 and adding a nominal 5,000 lb. to its pay-load capacity. The improvements include a 0.8% savings in specific fuel consumption (SFC) by the aircraft's 115,000-lb.-thrust GE90-115B engines. A slight redesign of the engine's low-pressure turbine blades and vanes, changes in their coatings, and improved tip clearances in the LPT and high-pressure compressor were among the modifications, a company official said. These were called for following results of endurance tests at General Electric's Peebles, Ohio, engine test facility.
