The U.S. aerospace industry is revising its sales estimates up ward for the year as commercial business begins to recover and contribute to already strong results from the military side. John W. Douglass, president and CEO of the Aerospace Industries Assn. (AIA), says 2004 sales are turning out better than the $148.1-billion forecast in December 2003. Based on the latest indicators, he now expects the industry will beat that figure by $1-5 billion as aerospace activity improves rapidly across the board in the U.S. this year. He believes the U.S. industry is well positioned to exploit the global recovery as the "sales of large civil air craft begin to grow in the second half of the decade." If the 2004 figure turns out to be $5 billion higher than forecast, that will put the industry a few billion dollars ahead of where the AIA thought it would be in 2005. The industry is now earning about 50% of its revenue from growing military sales, an enviable position compared with its European rivals, and is anticipating a ramp-up of civil sales through 2006. With the sales upswing, U.S. industry is poised to start hiring. Douglass says this year alone it probably will hire 15,000 people after a long and gradual decline 5 since the 1990s. Employment is down below 600,000 from 1.3 million in the 1980s.
