With demand for frigates, corvettes and other light combat ships multiplying around the globe, MBDA engineers are increasing efforts to transfer aerial and terrestrial missile technology to the naval domain. At the Euronaval exhibit here last week, company officials said they expect French armaments agency DGA to release an initial full-scale development contract for the Scalp Naval—a 1,000-km.-class variant of the Franco-British Storm Shadow/Scalp airborne cruise missile—later this year or in early 2005. The contract will concern the missile's Sylver A70 surface launch system, earmarked for the 27-ship Franco-Italian Fremm multimission frigate program.
