The U.S. will start firing man-portable surface-to-air missiles at engines as part of a growing Air Force and NASA initiative to iden- tify vulnerabilities of large commercial aircraft and ways to address them. The agencies are collaborating as they try to grapple with the perceived threat increase to commercial airliners, which also represent the bulk of the military's Civil Reserve Air Fleet (CRAF) program. But NASA, in particular, isn't satisfied with limiting its view to potential man-pads (man-portable air defense system) attacks. It also is scrutinizing fire-protection needs and demands for shielding systems against electronic attack.
