Jostling for position to take advantage of China's projected 3,000-plus helicopter market over the next 20 years, AgustaWestland and Changhe Aviation Industries are to set up a joint venture to produce the former's A109E twin-engine helicopter. The deal, several years in the making, will see final assembly component deliveries begin in time for initial helicopter deliveries in 2005, with an envisaged build rate of one helicopter per month. Amadeo Caporaletti, the AgustaWestland chairman, sees a civil market for between 100-150 A109E helicopters in China over the next 10 years. He characterizes the agreement, inked during Air Show China in Zhuhai, as a "strategic collaboration."
