Lufthansa Systems is poised to become a serious competitor in the market for air navi-gation charts as it works to complete a global electronic database being used initially to print paper products for a few airlines. Currently, Lufthansa German Airlines and Swiss International Air Lines are using paper charts printed from the new database, but Lufthansa Systems intends to be able to service any airline in the world with electronic or paper products by the end of next year. And it expects many airlines will be interested in a database capable of providing digital charts on electronic flight bags (EFB) as soon as they are installed in cockpits. EFBs are expected to move onto commercial flight decks in an evolutionary manner depending on the interest and budgets of airlines. And while EFBs can eliminate the expense of handling paper documents, the systems have up-front hardware and crew training costs.
