To fully appreciate the recent state of the launch services market, a good statistic with which to start is the number of launches attempted worldwide in 2001―a grand total of 60. From a historical perspective, the last time there were so few launches was in the early-1960s during the Kennedy Administration. 2001's 60 launches represented a drop of 29.4% compared to 2000, which was the most dramatic decline in the number of launches from one year to another in at least the last 10 years. To make matters worse, new launch contract awards began to dry up during the second half of 2001. No more than a dozen were announced in that period. As for 2002, it seems that the year probably closed out with about 65 launches.
