Delayed economic recovery and a shaky airline industry will suppress growth, weed out weak players and spur further consolidation in the maintenance, repair and overhaul business at least through 2005. The horrific events of the past year coupled with an unsteady Wall Street performance add up to a slow recovery for the airlines and MRO operators, both in the U.S., Europe and the Asia-Pacific regions. To survive and compete in this new business environment, operators are creating innovative packages designed to reduce cost and downtime for carriers, and this trend will gather momentum in the next few years. Those companies that fail to adapt are likely to fade from the scene. In addition, the industry still has too much capacity and not enough business to use that capacity effectively.
